Composite Excellence: New Materials – new tools
Composites are the materials of the future. The impetus to use composite materials is coming primarily from the aerospace industry. However, these light but rigid materials are also coming to the fore in automobile development and in “young” sectors such as the wind power industry. Following the Composite Excellence initiative launched at AMB 2010, the LMT Group is pooling its expertise in this growth sector and presenting the broadest product range on the market.
Smooth surfaces: the Ball Nose Endmill
The new spherical copying mill from LMT Onsrud ensures surface contours free of machining marks. It is used for milling synthetic linings, for example, for avoiding friction in artificial knee joints. The spherical copying mill achieves high-quality machining in a single step. The secret: it has polished surfaces and a very fine micro cutting geometry.

Increased efficiency and longer tool lives: High-Performance Composite Router
Composites can be machined more efficiently using the high-performance composite router from LMT Onsrud. Instead of grinding like standard routers, it cuts the material thereby generating chips which carry off the heat, thus avoiding heat build-up and tool failure, and resulting in longer tool lives and smooth edges.
Small diameters: the Mono-PCD Drill
Small diameters in hard or extremely abrasive materials are required in the electrical and aerospace industry as well as in the optics or watch industry, for example. LMT Belin has developed the mono-PCD drill for small diameters for such special applications. With its monolithic PCD tip, it is more reliable, exact and economical than solid carbide metal or soldered PCD.
Machining CFR stacks in one step: One-Shot Drills
In the aerospace industry, so-called stacks (material panels lying on top of each other) need to be drilled for riveting structural components. This is now handled reliably in a single step by the one-shot drill from LMT Belin.
Optimum surface quality for thermoplastics: the Saphir PCD Single-Lip Cutter
The new Saphir single-lip cutter from LMT Belin is the result of 40 years of experience in plastics machining. Its special PCD cutting edge displays cutting qualities which are comparable to those of natural diamonds – and is eminently suitable for finish-machining acrylic and Plexiglas.
