LMT Group Academy expands programme

When it comes to maintaining competitiveness, businesses attach great importance to staff training. In any event, that was one of the main results of a survey the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) carried out among 1,400 German firms in summer 2011. A total of 99% of these companies said they undertake measures in this field. Appropriately, therefore, the LMT Academy is expanding its programme to include regular Web seminars over the Internet. The sixth such event is already being held in January.
“What measures do you take to maintain long-term competitiveness?” was one of the central questions of the DIHK survey. Managers in the companies were able to choose between 15 different answers – from entering new sales markets to relocating parts of the company abroad. However, the area of “Employee Training” outstripped all the others, sometimes by a considerable margin.

Focus on employee expertise

This subject is extremely important, especially when it comes to the use of precision tools, because so much depends on employees’ expertise. That begins, for example, with the choice of the right tool: which cutter and cutting material is the best when a new material is introduced into production or the geometry of a component changes? After that, attention focuses on finding the right cutting parameters at the machine. Feed rate and cutting speed have to be set at the optimum values to guarantee efficient processes. “When you consider that materials and tools are constantly being improved, it soon becomes clear that the ongoing training of users in this area is highly significant,” explains Dr. Diethard Thomas, director of the LMT Group Academy.

Technology seminars with practical relevance

From its base in Schwarzenbek the LMT Group Academy has been offering a variety of training programmes in the tool technology sector since 2006. The central focus is on technology seminars covering various fields of application ranging from gear-cutting technology to die and mould making. They are held in English and German at different locations. “This year we are again also organizing various specialist conferences, such as the event on cutting materials and coatings being held in June at our alliance partner Boehlerit in Kapfenberg, Austria,” explains Dr. Thomas.

Web seminars every month

The academy launched a major innovation last year: the LMT Group Academy’s first Web seminar was held in December on the Internet platform at http://www.lmt-tools.com/videos-eng.htm. Customers and LMT colleagues from all over the world were able to learn more about machining composites through an Internet video stream. And the programme will be continuing this month with a Web seminar about milling on 27 January. Each of these Web events involves live presentations and tool demonstrations and offers the possibility of asking presenters questions directly using an Internet chat feature. The seminars last 30 minutes with another 15 minutes of online discussion for immediate questions and feedback. “The format gives customers all over the world the opportunity to improve their knowledge of their subject quickly and simply – without advanced planning or having to travel long distances. We provide information about new products, their technical potential and correct use. The goal is always the same: improving the productivity of processes even further.”
