LMT at METAV: spotlight on composites

Anyone measuring the mood in the metalworking sector by looking at the progress of the industry’s important fairs currently has to come to a rather positive appraisal. The year’s first major trade show is already registering strong growth: METAV in Dusseldorf has increased exhibition space by 10%. The German Machine Tool Builders’ Association (VDW), the event’s organizer, is expecting 620 exhibitors from 26 countries. LMT Tool Systems will be presenting its great expertise in the machining of composite materials within the framework of Composites World.

Visitors in Dusseldorf will be able to find out about the entire range of manufacturing technology and automation on a total of roughly 35,000 square metres. Interestingly, an especially large increase has been observed among the manufacturers of precision tools. Their exhibition space will rise by a total of 70%. Altogether, says the VDW, they will now occupy one fifth of the entire fair area.

New demands on cutting tools

The Composites World Area in Hall 14, Booth B93, at METAV makes clear how composite materials are playing an increasingly important role in the automotive and aircraft industries. Various companies are contributing to the booth under the heading “Fibre composites for lightweight structures”. In this setting, LMT Tool Systems will be presenting its many years of expertise in the machining of composites. The Group does not only offer the most extensive tool range on the market; its experts also have a great deal of experience with the many different materials and structures. “We want to use the Composites World Area to demonstrate just how crucial know-how about these materials and processes is in this sector. It is essential for unlocking the potential that generates higher productivity and quality,” explains Xia Xu, head of the Composites & Plastics Segments at LMT.

Meeting the challenge

Composite materials are both very light and very strong. They can thus contribute to reducing the overall weight of a car, for example, in the development of new electric vehicles. However, they also present cutting tools with totally new challenges. Correctly used, they should prevent chunking, fibre projections and delamination during the machining of the workpiece. Developers at LMT Belin and LMT Onsrud, the competence centres for the machining of composites within the LMT Group, are very familiar with these challenges. Using special blade geometries and specific cutting materials such as PCD or solid carbide in combination with diamond and nano coatings, LMT is able to offer the most varied standard and specialized solutions that provide highly efficient tailormade solutions.

Preview of LMT highlights

Martin Danielczick, Head of LMT Group Academy, and Martin Heckel, Sales Strategy Manager at LMT Tool Systems, collected the highligts of LMT's METAV performance in a video for those who are interested. Three of the highlights are: the new LMT-Tools-Katalogue, the TeraSpeed coating for LMT indexable inserts for machining cast material and the WPB-AF µ jet – for smallest radii in mold and die manufacturing.
