22. June 2011. From premachining and roughing to the finishing of the crank pins and thread cutting – practically the entire spectrum of tool applications is used during the production of a crankshaft. With its new Nanosilver product, LMT alliance partner BOEHLERIT is putting an innovative cutting material on the market specially designed for the machining of crankshafts. New substrates and the innovative nanocoating guarantee extremely long tool life – and lead to a significant increase in productivity.
The success of the Nanosilver inserts is based on a combination of different factors: BOEHLERIT crankshaft specialists have applied a thick nanostructured silvery coating to three new carbide substrates. On one hand, the new substrates substantially reduce the tendency towards thermal cracking. On the other, the thick coating is extremely heat-resistant.
Up to 200% longer tool life
Nanosilver boosts tool life by 40 to 200% for the dry machining of steel materials. As a result, tools need to be changed less frequently, thereby reducing the particularly expensive set-up times involved in crankshaft machining. Nanosilver also improves the reliability of the production process: signs of wear and tear are more readily detected on the inserts’ silvery coating, which means tools can be changed in good time.
BOEHLERIT offers various Nanosilver cutting grades: the tough LCP35C, the universal LCP30C and the especially wear-resistant LCP25C.
