The German machine tool industry was able to begin the new year after a highly successful 2012: according to a recent report by the German Machine Tool Builders’ Association (VDW), production increased by 9% last year. The experts also anticipate moderate growth in 2013. The main impetus for this comes from China.
German manufacturers of machine tools were able to generate a total turnover of 14.1 billion euros last year, reported the VDW at its annual results press briefing. The Chinese market continues to be largely responsible for this success. A total turnover of 2.4 billion euros was achieved in the largest single market – an increase of 14% compared to the previous year. In other words, German manufacturers sold twice as many machines in China as in the USA, their second largest market.
In the face of decreasing orders, the VDW’s forecast for 2013 is a little more cautious: it anticipates growth of only roughly 1%. However, the general market distribution is expected to remain largely unchanged. Investments in new plants will be realized above all in Asia and America, less in Europe.
Importance of car manufacturing
How strongly German machine tool makers’ success is linked to rapidly growing car production in China is shown in an interesting report by Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI). At the moment, say the foreign trade experts, the Asian country above all lacks machines that can produce higher value components for the higher value car models that are attracting increasing demand. That is also why many automotive components are imported. The most important items here for German producers are gearboxes and gear components.
