Research and development - the backbone of effective innovation
Innovation is an investment in the future. This acknowledgement of the importance of research and development has long been bearing fruit: more than 300 patents and registered designs have been granted to the companies in the Leitz group.

The company's technology centres and laboratories have long been occupied with fundamental research into cutting processes and the abrasive properties of cutting materials.
Safety at work, noise and emission protection are continuously being improved.

Dialogue with higher education institutes and public research institutions provides valuable support to progress in these fields. Using the latest methods of development, construction and production, supported by electronic information technology, and by exploiting databases of patents and engineering methods, new technologies are developed and implemented in practice. This progress is ensured through flexible, independent development groups and the specialist knowledge that they share amongst themselves and that they pass on through joint developments and seminars: the factors for success are thorough knowledge of the materials used in cutting and materials sectors, knowledge of process and application technology, and, above all, detailed understanding of customers' needs.
