Rotary shaving with Nanolock performance improvement
A great deal in rotary shaving naturally depends on the material that is to be machined. The conditions that will be met by the indexable insert tool used change according to the type of steel. But the demands on the indexable inserts remain the same: while the basic substrate must ensure a high machining reliability, the geometry provides, amongst other things, optimum chip removal and heat dissipation.
The engineers at LMT's group partner Boehlerit have achieved an extraordinary increase in performance in this field. Using a CVD process, a nano-structured, needle-shaped layer of titanium carbonate is applied to the cutting tool. The needle-like structure creates a surface like that of a zip fastener, and the layer on top can bond to this more effectively. Using Nanolock tools, astonishing performance improvements in the rotary shaving field have recently been achieved.
