The Evolution of Thread Rolling

Thread production is characterized by extreme quality requirements - because the fasteners in cars and machines have to withstand very high loads. Especially when it comes to combining this high quality with high speed for low cycle times in large-volume production, LMT Fette provides the solution with the EVOline rolling head generation. The EVOline tangential rolling head is the first product development in this segment to combine 3D printing design with Industry 4.0 possibilities.

T3.18 EVO: The evolution continues

The latest generation of the EVOline T3.18 tangential rolling head family is considered the most compact size. Its significantly reduced center height makes it suitable for installation on multi-spindle automatic lathes with a tight installation space situation. It also offers an optimized cooling and flushing system with variable connection options. The resistance of the T3.18 EVO rolling head has been significantly increased by reducing stress peaks. This leads to greater process reliability, especially in applications with higher-strength materials.

Additive manufacturing of the rolling head arms

Through the use of additive manufacturing, the component structures of the EVOline tangential rolling head could be optimized in terms of force flow, resulting in a significant increase in breaking strength. It was also possible to integrate adjustable flushing and cooling nozzles in the rolling head hinge, for optimized volume flow. In order to increase reliability and efficiency in the process, the Smart Services area is also being continuously expanded. The aim is to tailor the tool even more specifically to the individual application and thus achieve additional improvements in the customer's overall process. The other product features and the associated customer benefits are synonymous with the EVOline family: Maximum process reliability with safe tool handling ensure a noticeable increase in the efficiency of the rolling heads.

Possible Applications of Tangential Rolling Heads

Tangential rolling heads were developed primarily for rolling behind a collar diameter. The mode of operation is therefore by the plunge method. Tangential thread rolling heads can be mounted on all lathes that have an automatic infeed. In particular, tangential thread rolling heads are used for the following threads and applications:

  • Threads behind a collar
  • Extremely short threads
  • Threads with very short run-out (approx. 1x pitch)
  • Knurling according to DIN 82
  • Burnishing
  • Form rolling

Safe Tool Handling

Labeling instructions on the rolling head components simplify correct assembly as well as the identification of spare parts during disassembly. And: Handling convenience increases even more because the entire rolling head can be installed and removed without tools. The EVOline tangential rolling head is available in five sizes covering thread diameters from 1.6 to 34 millimeters.
